Pre-Pointe Assessments

Being able to dance ‘en-pointe’ is one of the most exciting moments of a dancers life. It is such an exciting milestone, however it is a challenge to the human body.

We only have one body, and it is incredibly important, particularly during a period of rapid growth, that the move to working en-pointe is safe for the dancer.

A pre-pointe assessment is an individualised assessment of the readiness for pointe work and is conducted following international best practice.

Our pre-pointe assessment includes biomechanical screening of:

  • Foot mobility

  • Strength and control of the foot and lower leg

  • Range, control and use of turnout

  • Postural alignment

  • Pelvic stability and alignment

  • Trunk strength and control

  • Growth

  • The candidate will also be assessed on a variety of simple ballet technique movements.

Any areas of concern will be identified, and a home programme designed. Following your appointment, a report will be emailed to you and your dance teacher.

Follow-up appointments may be needed.

Two hour appointment.

A dancer’s body is their instrument.

Teaching anatomy to students is a great way to layer understanding about their body.

Topics can include:

  • The skeleton

  • Basic muscular system

  • The foot

  • Ankle and lower leg

  • The pelvis and hip; how to train your turnout

  • Breathing and how this contributes to our ‘core’

  • Safe stretching

Available as regular classes in your studio, or workshops.

Pricing and duration dependant on your needs.

My sessions with Sarah were an integral part of my training. They helped me to develop an awareness of my body and how to strengthen and recognise weakness and injury. Her knowledge of the body, and in particular a dancer’s body, was invaluable to me. A few years on, I still think about and use the techniques and exercises she taught me.
— Teagan Tank - Former Dancer Royal New Zealand Ballet
Sarah was absolutely instrumental in my build up to the Highland Dancing National Championships in 2019. She was able to identify weaknesses in my body that were affecting my dancing, that I hadn’t even realised myself.
As well as improving my dancing, I also found my sessions with Sarah helped prevent many of the injuries I typically get whilst exercising. I strongly recommend Sarah’s classes to anyone wanting to improve their body’s performance, or to prevent future injuries.
